SEBA Conference
Last month SEBA held its annual member’s conference and most Board members did attend. There were several guest speakers at the conference including Sheriff Rod Hoops, District Attorney Mike Ramos, Chief Probation Officer Michelle Scray, and PORAC President Ron Cottingham. The common topic among these speakers was Assembly Bill 109 that deals with the release of low level parolees back into County supervision in one form or another. This could mean probation status with the County and/or County jail time, resulting in the added burden of supervising and detaining an unknown number of parolees in our County that would have normally been in State prison or supervised under State Parole.
The Sheriff, District Attorney and Chief Probation Officer have several ideas on how they are going to handle the upcoming issues, but are unsure just how things will go due to the unknown numbers of parolees and the amount of money the State will continue to fund the County to assist in this endeavor.
The release of parolees to our County will begin October 1st, 2011 which means by the time you read this article it will already be affecting your respective departments. We all know that many changes will begin to occur as soon as this happens and that it will be a learning process for all of us.
Please feel free to call if you have a question, if you would rather not wait for me to make a station visit.
As always stay safe.
